At the time, he was standing on a hill and was watching the progress being made by a near-by company assaulting a hill He noticed many of the wounded were taking routes back that led directly into a heavy curtain of enemy fire. (Donald Shook's note: This was "K" Company, 17th Infantry and CPL Fred McGee was awarded the Silver Star during this action - Fred passed away in 2020 and it has since been announced that his Silver Star will be upgraded to the Medal of Honor)
The citation accompanying the award reads in part: "With complete disregard for his own safety, he voluntarily dashed down into the valley which was receiving heavy enemy artillery and mortar fire. There, despite the intense enemy fire, he remained in an exposed position, directing the wounded to routes of safety."
1LT Jourdonnais also was awarded the Purple Heart for a head wound that he received during a battle in December of 1951.
