Communist are known to be stubborn, but one captured recently by the Buffaloes proved downright mulish. "Freddie" a Red mule, was captured by Corporal John M. Chabala and PFC Cecil L. Elwess - With the assistance of a member of the Korean Service Corps (KSC) following an intense United Nations artillery bombardment of an enemy outpost position. The mule escaped it's communist overseers during the barrage and wandered across a mined valley to the "Fox" Company outpost.
For several days the "prisoner" worked diligently for his captors. He carried many supplies up the 400 yard long trail to the outpost. "We had to double-time to keep up with him," said Elwess.
On request of "Fox" company commander, Captain Leslie G. McNair, Freddie was sent to the 7th Medical Battalion for a checkup by the veterinarian. While there, the mule broke his harness and set out to see the country. He hasn't been spotted since.
"He was a good mascot and we'd certainly like to have him back, says CPL John Chabala.
